Grand Haven's Pier Needs Repairs

The pier in Grand Haven needs repairs.  People like to fish from it and some can be seen doing just that.  I took this photo that shows fishing boats in the channel of the Grand River and out in Lake Michigan.  Pictured is the cat walk and its shadow with the lighthouse showing through the metal structure.

A Salmon Poem

Circuits
Light from a star that died

shines out
from jade green eyes.
A salmon tail fans streambed stones
and dark silt swirls.
Millennia ago a star spurt fire and
now a constellation of eggs
and white milt spiral down
in black water.
Fishbone lattices litter the stream
that speaks of glaciers
and purls.
Frost flowers bloom on the cut bank
while embryos curl in sweet cold sleep below.

The book is widely available in bookstores and on the net.  Barnes & Noble offers a good price.

When May Flies Emerge

When May flies, or fish flies as some call them, emerge from the water of the Great Lakes, the fishing heats up.  These flies are an important part of the Great Lakes ecosystem.  Read about may flies in my book, The Dynamic Great Lakes, available from bn.com, Amazon.com and many other on line stores.

Fishing on the Great Lakes

Anadramous fish such as coho salmon and king salmon are now starting to run from the Great Lakes and then up the same streams where they were hatched.  This knowledge lies embedded in their bodies along the lateral line that runs up their sides.  They will find the place then the females will deposit their eggs on the streambed and males will follow and deposit their sticky milt on the eggs.

Sports fishers fish from piers or boats hoping to catch a salmon or even a steelhead.

Fishing on the Great Lakes

Pictured is a king salmon also called a Chinook salmon. These anadromous fish ( fish that run upstream to spawn) are now being caught in Lake Michigan and are of a good size. They are Pacific salmon that were planted in the Great Lakes to control an invasive species of trash fish.

Read about this phenomenon in my book, The Dynamic Great Lakes, widely available on the www and in stores.

Lake Superior

2009 Pictured Rocks, Lake Superior Michigan

Taking a boat trip, kayaking or canoeing along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Lake Superior Michigan is a great way to enjoy beauty. Munising, Michigan is the place. There are hiking trails that end at delightful waterfalls.

There are beaches that are wonderful places to find agates. Some of the oldest rocks in the world are found on the shores of Lake Superior. There are also great places to fish.

More information about the Great Lakes in my book, The Dynamic Great Lakes.

Fishing on the Great Lakes

Fishing is heating up on Lake Michigan. The Great Lakes are freshwater, however Pacific salmon have been planted and are thriving here. Also steelhead (a lake run rainbow trout) and the native brown trout.

I had a salmon for dinner and it was delicious. I baked it in olive oil and a little butter. The trick is to turn it once and then take it out of the oven right away when the fish flakes easily.

Read about Great Lakes fish in my book, The Dynamic Great Lakes. This book is available from the publisher at 1-301-695-1707. It is widely available on websites such as Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com as well as many other stores.
